Furry escape artist on the loose: Dog breaks out of Saskatoon SPCA kennel

SASKATOON — A runaway puppy brought to the Saskatoon SPCA showed some dogged determination when it managed to break out of its kennel and return to the streets.

George, a 10-month-old pit-bull-Labrador cross, managed to get out  overnight Friday in the SPCA’s lost-and-found area.

SPCA spokeswoman Jasmine Hanson says George had to unlock two doors — one on the kennel and one on the exterior exit — to make his getaway.

There’s no video of the furry escape artist walking out the door, but the SPCA does have footage from an exterior camera showing him on the building’s perimeter.

Anyone who may have seen George is asked to call the SPCA at 306-374-7387.

The SPCA has been in touch with the owner, who had been aware George was at the facility and was planning to pick him up.

Hanson said the first challenge George would have faced was the lift-latch on his kennel. She said larger dogs in particular can sometimes get latches open.

“They are able to just kind of jump up and lift the latch a little bit, then the door will swing outward.”

The second door — which locks from the inside — would have taken some nimble paw work.

“He would have jumped up and pushed his paw on that handle and then the door would have swung open for him.”

Hanson said the organization is “100 per cent” certain no employees were involved in the brazen breakout.

She also stressed George’s escape from inside is rare. More often, animals might take off when someone brings them into the building.

The shelter has added an additional lock on the kennels and is looking at a second lock on the exterior door.

“We’re going to be looking at a stronger deadbolt, above the reach of any dog, no matter what the size.”
