Toronto Wolfpack add to post-season roster with signing of Mason Caton-Brown

TORONTO — The Toronto Wolfpack, who have lost backs Greg Worthington and Adam Higson for the season, have signed Mason Caton-Brown from Super League side Wakefield Trinity for their post-season run

The 25-year-old Caton-Brown, who can play both centre and wing, joined Wakefield last year from Salford, where he scored 25 tries in 37 appearances.  

Toronto reportedly beat out Hull KR and Salford to get Caton-Brown, who started his pro career with the London Broncos. The move to acquire Caton-Brown, who made just five appearances for Wakefield this season, has been rumoured for days but wasn’t announced until the paperwork was complete.

“Thanks to everyone at Wakefield, had some really good times there but it hasn’t worked out for me this year … Really excited to join Toronto Wolfpack, especially at this part of the season to try and help them gain promotion into the Super League,” Caton-Brown, a former England Students international, said via social media.

Toronto (20-2-1) opens the post-season push for promotion to the elite Super League on Aug. 12 at Halifax RLFC (16-6-1), the first of seven games in the so-called Super 8s qualifiers.

“With the injuries received to Greg Worthington and Adam Higson, it has left us short on outside backs at a crucial point in the season,” Toronto coach Paul Rowley said in a statement.

“We have been keen on Mason for long parts of the season and to be able to bring in someone of his experience is a fantastic coup in such a short space of time. We’ve reacted quickly, but we’re delighted with the acquisition.”

Worthington is out for the season after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in Toronto’s 52-10 win over Rochdale on July 21. Higson is also done for the year, although a team spokesman was unable to detail the exact nature of his injury.

The post-season format sees the top four teams in the second-tier Betfred Championship face off with the bottom four Super League teams to fill four berths in the first-tier league next year.

The eight teams will play each other once. The top three clubs earn status in the Super League while No. 4 will take on No. 5 in what is dubbed the Million Pound Game to see who joins them.

The Super League teams involved are Leeds Rhinos (8-13-2), Hull Kingston Rovers (8-14-1), Salford Red Devils (7-16-0) and Widnes Vikings (3-21-0).

The other Championship sides involved are London Broncos (16-6-1) and Toulouse Olympique (16-6-1). Halifax is the lone part-time side.

The Wolfpack will host Hull KR, Widnes, London and Toulouse, with away games at Halifax, Salford and Leeds.
