Grande Prairie Visitor Information Centre has been steady since May

More than 2,000 people have stopped by the Grande Prairie Visitor Information Centre so far this travel season.

Kylee Campbell, lead supervisor for the GP Visitor Information Centre says there has been a reversal this year as people are heading south instead of north.

“So far they (the numbers) have looked pretty good. We’ve had quite a lot of Alaskan travellers heading back down towards Jasper or the States, mainly. Usually, we get more heading up.”

Campbell adds the numbers are right around average, but there has been an increase in visitors from other parts of the province.

“We have also seen with the Alberta Summer Games and the different festivals we’ve seen an increase in other people from different regions of Alberta coming to visit the region. As well as other countries which is really interesting.”

The numbers are slightly down from last year, but according to Campbell, there is a reason why.

“We are a little bit down only because last year was the Alaska Highway’s 75th anniversary. Compared to other years other than last year, we are pretty comparable.”

Campbell says the Centre had roughly 1,400 visitors in June and July with an additional 750 in May.

The travel season is from May to September.
