Grande Cache could become part of MD of Greenview
Town of Grande Cache officials are worried about the future of their community.
Staff from the Town and Municipal District of Greenview are working on a report to the province about future viability that could be followed by a vote among residents about dissolving into the MD.
Town CAO Denise Thompson says this process first started two years ago when the Council in place then decided there was not enough tax base to pay for all service and infrastructure needs.
“We have huge amounts of infrastructure that needs to be replaced or built and we cannot fund those things. We have a huge capacity issue. Huma Resource issues, financial issues, the list goes on and on,” said Thompson.
She adds this came after what she terms “catastrophic downturns in the economy”, including the closure of the coal mine.
“When I came here a year ago and I was starting to look for a home. There were over 100 foreclosed homes here and assessments dropped dramatically,” she said.
That mine has been sold and is set to open again. The prison in the area has renewed their lease for 25-years and Thompson calls that a “win”.
“When people have jobs, they pay their bills. They maintain their homes,” she said.
