OTTAWA INSISTS RUSSIAN SPIES’ KIDS AREN’T CANADIAN

Though Russian spies do their work in secret, Ottawa insists they’re still employees of Moscow and their children aren’t Canadian citizens. In a newly filed submission to the Supreme Court of Canada, the government argues the Toronto-born son of Russian intelligence agents should be denied Canadian citizenship under an exception that applies to any child born in Canada to a foreign diplomat.

NO PLANS TO RETALIATE AGAINST SAUDIS: MORNEAU

Finance Minister Bill Morneau says the federal government has no plans to launch retaliatory economic measures against Saudi Arabia as the kingdom seeks to punish Canada in a still-unfolding diplomatic feud. In recent days, Riyadh has suspended diplomatic ties, expelled our ambassador and recalled its own envoy to Ottawa. This, after Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland and her department criticized the regime on Twitter for its arrest of social activists, demanding their immediate release.

THREATENING ONTARIO WILDFIRE ALMOST UNDER CONTROL

A massive wildfire raging in Ontario’s cottage country is nearly under control. The blaze known as “Parry Sound 33” is now considered “held,” meaning it is expected to stay within control boundaries put in place by fire crews, who have been battling the flames from the air and ground for three weeks. But the fight isn’t over, and crews are working overtime to try to cut the fire down in size.

PM TRUDEAU TO VISIT DANFORTH

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the opening ceremony for the Taste of the Danforth festival in Toronto tonight. The hugely popular street festival is going ahead just weeks after a gunman killed two people and wounded 13 others in the Greektown neighbourhood. Trudeau was in the neighbourhood on July 30 to pay his respects to Reese Fallon, 18, and 10-year-old Julianna Kozis who died in the July 30 rampage.

JULY JOBLESS NUMBERS OUT TODAY

The unemployment numbers for July will be released today by Statistics Canada. In June, a healthy gain of 31,800 jobs wasn’t enough to keep the unemployment rate from rising to six per cent as more people searched for work. The agency said the jobless rate for June increased from 5.8 per cent in May despite the addition of new jobs because nearly 76,000 more people entered the workforce.

HEAT WAVE COULD SET PRAIRIE RECORDS TODAY

A heat wave across much of Western Canada could shatter temperature records today in some places, including Calgary. The Weather Network’s all-time high for Calgary is 36.1 Celsius, which was set in 1919 and matched in 1933. The network is forecasting a high of 37 today, but notes smoke from wildfires could prevent a record from being set. The forecast for Regina calls for a highs of 35 today and 38 tomorrow and it will be just as hot in parts of Manitoba.

CANADIAN FIRM CAN GO AFTER VENEZUELA’S U.S. REFINERIES

A Canadian gold mining firm has won the right to go after Venezuela’s U.S.-based oil refineries to collect $1.4 billion that it lost in a take-over by the late-President Hugo Chavez. A U.S. judge in Delaware made the ruling Thursday in favour of Crystallex. Chavez took over the gold mining firm and many other international companies as part of his socialist revolution.
