The Air Quality Health Index is expected to get worse Tuesday in the Grande Prairie region, and a Special Air Quality Statement is in effect.

As of 7 a.m., Grande Prairie’s air quality was at a 5, or moderate.  Beaverlodge was the same and Rycroft was at a 4.

It’s expected to get worse, moving to an 8 in Grande Prairie during the day Tuesday and then to 7 Wednesday

According to Environment Canada, a plume of smoke from forest fires in British Columbia has moved into northwestern Alberta resulting in local poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada says the poor air quality can cause increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.
