Canada’s Women’s volleyball team set to compete at World Championship in Japan

Sep 28, 2018 | 10:57 AM

Canada’s Women’s volleyball team is in Sapporo, Japan for the World Championship.

Team Canada setter and Beaverlodge native Dani Smith says she is looking forward to the opportunity to represent Canada and potentially earn a spot at the Summer Olympics in two years.

“It’s a really great competition. The winner qualifies for the Olympics. So, it’s the first chance to qualify for 2020. We are really excited, really excited for Japan, really excited for the competition.”

Smith will be representing Canada for the first time in her career at Worlds and says it’s a real honour.

“It never gets old. Just being able to represent your country on the world stage is an incredible feeling and it gives listening to the national anthem a whole new meaning for me.”

Smith adds there are a lot of fresh faces on the team this year.

“Every four years after Olympic qualifications there’s usually a pretty big turnover, but there are a few of us older ones that are (still) here. Last year was the first summer of the new quad [team] leading up to the 2020 Olympics. So, a lot of faces are familiar, and some are new.”

Canada will be in Pool B along with Bulgaria, Italy, Turkey, China, and Cuba.

Their first match on Saturday versus Turkey is at 2:20 a.m. Alberta time.

The event concludes on October 20th.
