GPRC Women’s Basketball team starts season Friday

Oct 19, 2018 | 2:09 PM

The GPRC Women’s Basketball team is set for their season opener tonight against The King’s University in Edmonton.

Head coach Mandy Botham says while the team is mainly new players, she is happy with how they have come together in a short time.

“I’ve been really pleased with the effort and the progress we have made so far. We have a lot of rookies on the team this year. So, there has been lots of learning and lots of improvement, which is nice.”

The team is comprised of 10 first-year players, with only two returnees.

She adds one player from overseas has really stood out.

“We have an athlete here name is Sophie Melin and it’s her first year here at Grande Prairie Regional College. She is an international athlete from Stockholm, Sweden. She has been a really strong player on the court and a really strong leader on and off the court for us.”

Botham says rookie Heidi Derksen has also caught her eye through the pre-season with her intensity and focus.

Tonight’s game starts at 6 p.m. Saturday’s clash begins at 1 p.m.
