County reps at Edmonton convention lobbying for roads and infrastructure

Nov 19, 2018 | 6:10 AM

County of Grande Prairie officials will be lobbying for road projects and a new Beaverlodge Hospital at the Rural Municipalities of Alberta Convention.

It gets underway today in Edmonton.

County Reeve Leanne Beaupre says one of the main things they will press for is the twinning of Highway 40 and the Wapiti Bridge.

“We hear constantly, both from our ratepayers and from the travelling public, about the safety concerns on Highway 40. It certainly is an economic development issue as well with the amount of activity south of Grande Prairie in the Montney and Duvernay areas.”

She adds twinning the bridge would also alleviate some safety concerns.

“There are many days that there are accidents either on the north side of the bridge or the south side of the bridge and having a second dedicated access across the Wapiti River would certainly make a difference for industry and for those that live in the Grovedale area and beyond.”

Beaupre says other road projects on the County’s mind are Highways 43X and 40X, and the junction of Highways 43 and 733 near Bezanson.

She adds the County wants to make sure that the Beaverlodge Hospital remains a high priority for the province as it is an important link in the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital system.

“It’s integral that those rural hospitals maintain operations to do respite (care) and rehabilitation and serve their communities so that all of the pressure is not only on the major hospitals.”

The Rural Municipalities of Alberta Convention runs through Thursday.
