What’s your song?

I may be a few years behind the times but I just watched the movie based on the life of Florence Foster Jenkins who was once reviewed as the ‘worst singer in the world’. I can’t remember the last time I laughed out loud so much at a movie.

If you haven’t seen the flick, the incredibly talented Meryl Streep takes the lead like you’ve never seen her before and Hugh Grant does a great job as well making it well worth the 90 minutes of leisure time well spent.

She ‘sings’ her little heart out and enjoys every minute of it. I so admired her character’s joy in doing something she loved.

It reminded me of a couple of months back when I was on stage in Vegas and I played my Nice for a Living song with Luke the Uke. A gent came up to me after the program and said, ‘Your uke playing isn’t very good, but that song is very important.’

I took no offense at all, I just laughed and told him he was 100% correct on all counts! If I waited until I was very good many people would miss the opportunity to hear that important song and I know that the song influences and affects people. Not everyone, but some. Enough to make me keep playing it.

To quote Florence:

“They might say I was the worst singer in the world but they can’t say I didn’t sing.”

So, I ask you:

  • What’s your ‘song’?
  • What is it time to do?
  • What do you love?
  • What brings you joy?
  • What’s holding you back?
  • When is it time to finally get going on?

They might not say you were great, but they won’t be able to say you didn’t try.

    Best, Steph

PS – Here’s the imperfect Nice for a Living song.
