Renovations under way at new bottle recycling depot

Dec 11, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Signature Support Services officially kicked off its project to relocate the Plus One Bottle Depot in Grande Prairie.

A sledgehammer ceremony was held at the old Peavey Mart location in the Westgate Shopping centre today where the public and members of local government were in attendance.

Signature Support Services Business Service Director Brenda Smith says the relocation will be home to some high-end recycling equipment.

“We’re going with some fairly high-tech automated sorting and counting equipment here,” says Smith. “It should give the residents of Grande Prairie much superior service to what we have now over at the Plus One Bottle Depot over by the Eco Centre.”

The transition will also include the relocation of two programs run by Signature Support Services called Community Connections Learning & Leisure which offers skill development and leisure opportunities, and the Day Activity Program which serves individuals with higher needs and focuses on developing life skills and skills aimed at preparing its members for employment.

Signature Support Services Executive Director Darrin Stubbs says the new location is going to be much better for the organization’s programs.

“The nice thing is we’re really close to the shopping centre, so there’s a lot of opportunities for employment for our people,” says Stubbs. “We have a very high rate of our people who are employed in the community. So that’s going to increase the opportunity for some of our people to get some jobs out here.”

The renovations are expected to be complete in spring of next year.
