Ukrainian Cultural Society dance studio floods

Jan 26, 2019 | 4:30 AM

A water leak occuring over the Winter holidays, has closed the Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture & Heritage dance studio. As a result, dance classes have come to a halt while the group works to renovate and raise additional repair funds.

“Unfortunately, our dance studio is un-usable right now,” said Jennifer Taylor, Co-President for Trovanda Cultural Ukrainian Society. “The leak was repaired but the studio floor, walls and roof have major water damage. Our specialty dancefloor was destroyed, as well.”

A video posted to the groups Facebook page depicts the studio on the day of the flood:

Although, the volunteer organization did have insurance at the time of the flood, they need an additional $9,000 in non-covered costs to get back up and running. Expenses include, a $5,000 deductible and additional repair fees.

“We need our dancers to have a safe area for them to dance, and are working as quickly as possible, to fix this situation. But we need help,” says Taylor.

To assist with donations, the Ukrainian society will be hosting a ‘Malanka Gala’ at Revolution Place on January 26.

“A ‘Malanka’, that’s what we call our Ukrainian New Years,” explains Taylor. “We have a Ukrainian dinner and then our children dance at it, as our entertainment. We have a DJ coming that will be playing music afterwards, for a family dance and fun. We also have a silent auction and that’s in hopes to raise money for the studio and a 50/50, as well.”

Tickets to the 2019 Malanka Gala are available at the Crystal Centre Box Office. To find out more information about the Ukranianian Society and how to assist with funding visit their website at http://www.troyandagp.com/home.html  .
