New guidelines for scattering cremated ashes

Alberta has developed new guidelines for the scattering of cremated ashes.
The province says that while it has never been against the law to scatter ashes, the guidelines will provide clarity to people who wish to honour their deceased family members in keeping with their cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs.
Ashes may be scattered on unoccupied provincial Crown land or water, including provincial parks, but not near water treatment intakes and facilities, or places where recreational water activities occur.
The province says the new guidelines only apply to provincially owned lands and waterways, so anyone wishing to scatter ashes on federal or municipal property should first consult their local governments.
