Plus 1 Bottle Depot expected to be complete in May

We can expect to see the Plus One Bottle Depot in the Westgate Shopping Centre to be complete this spring.

Signature Support Services Executive Director Darrin Stubbs has provided an update on the project.

The new bottle depot should be complete after April.

“Current status is: we’re about four weeks out,” says Stubbs. “As long as everything lines up and all the contractors are able to get everything done properly and without any hiccups, we’re hoping to have a soft opening by May 1st.”

Stubbs says the project did see some delays such as having to upgrade the building’s transformer. He says the upgraded sorting equipment required more power than expected, and a new transformer should be arriving on Monday.

The next steps for crews working on the project is moving everything over from the old depot to the new location, and getting staff trained on the new sorting and counting equipment.

The new sorting and counting equipment is expected to arrive the same day as the new transformer, April 1, and Stubbs says it’ll take about a week to set up and begin testing. He hopes to begin training staff on how to use the new, high-tech hardware by about the third week of April.

Stubbs explains the incoming equipment is coming from across the country.

“The current stuff that we have at the Plus 2 site is out of Norway, so it’s really hard to get support and maintenance and all the kind of stuff done for it. So, the new equipment is sourced out of Quebec. They have stations in Calgary and Edmonton that can get to us a lot quicker and help us. It’s actually quite faster than the existing equipment we’re using now, so we’re really excited about that.”

Stubbs notes he’s also excited to move forward with the project and begin painting the new site after the new equipment is installed.
