City votes against allocating funding to St. John Paul II storage project, and other council highlights

The City has made the decision not to allocate money towards a storage project for the Saint John Paul II Performing Arts Centre.

The project was a topic of discussion at last nights council meeting.

A funding request was made by the Grande Prairie Catholic School District and the recommendation to council was to allocate $250,000 to the project from the SCORES Capital Funding, contingent on a minimum of $250,000 being secured from other sources.

Council voted against the recommendation, citing not enough planning for the project has been done as one of the reasons for the decision.

Council members also voted in favour of providing complimentary transit service for the 2019 Stompede during last night’s meeting.

Mayor Bill Given explains it’ll be the second year the city has provided the complimentary service, which was quite successful last year.

“The City of Grande Prairie did this for the first time last year in support to the Stompede, obviously a really huge event in our region and a great event for Grande Prairie residents,” says Given. “The City wanted to come on board and support the event by providing free transit service. We did that last year as a pilot project, and the pilot was so successful that we’re going to do that again this year.”

Another highlight during last night’s meeting was the City being asked to host the 2022 Alberta Winter Games.

The City will be writing a letter of intent which will signal its interest in considering submitting a bid.

Other council highlights included the Mayor proclaiming National Dental Hygienists Week, and representatives from the taxi industry voicing concerns about City By-laws that are affecting them. Those concerns will be brought up at a future city committee meeting.
