ELECTION 2019

LOEWEN, Todd (United Conservative Party)

Apr 9, 2019 | 1:02 PM

1. Why should eligible voters cast a ballot for you?

I was elected as an MLA in 2015 and have always been a strong supporter of Alberta’s energy and business sectors by fighting for the approval of all pipelines and the elimination of the job-killing carbon tax — a tax that punishes northern Albertans. I was born and raised in rural Alberta and my family has always lived in the Valleyview area, where we have farmed. I understand the challenges that we face in the Peace Country and I believe that the United Conservative plan will get Alberta back on its feet again.

Knowing the unique challenges of farming, I have always been a strong opponent of any burdensome regulations that threaten family farming, like Bill 6. As a small business owner, I know that reducing high taxes and cutting red tape are essential for creating the free enterprise environment that individuals and businesses need to succeed. And, as a father, I believe that the NDP is failing families with their out-of-control deficit spending, saddling our children and grandchildren with more debt. I understand the importance of quality health care, education, and respecting seniors who built our communities. If re-elected, it is my promise to you that I will be a strong voice for the Peace Country – always representing the needs of my constituents first – as part of a UCP team that will work tirelessly to build an Alberta strong and free.

2. If elected, what is the first thing you would want to accomplish?

The first act of a United Conservative government would be to eliminate the carbon tax. However, we would quickly be taking a number of steps to re-ignite our lagging economy because we cannot afford to passively wait for a recovery any longer. We would promote economic growth by easing the tax and regulatory burden on development and job creation. Economists project that this will actually result in a net increase in revenues for the government as investment and jobs return to Alberta. In fact, they estimate that 55,000 jobs will be created by our plan.

I know that some people have said that we must put a carbon tax in because Trudeau’s Liberals demand it. I do not believe that Alberta has an obligation to appease Ottawa. Strong leadership in the past has defended Alberta’s interests and our rightful place in Confederation. Strong, United Conservative leadership will stand up for Alberta once again. We will fight Trudeau’s unconstitutional federal carbon tax in court alongside Ontario, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and New Brunswick. We will fight Bill C-69, which is a disaster for energy development, and the tanker ban on the west coast.

We are prepared to launch a strategy which will get foreign money out of politics and stop the slander and manipulation by opponents of Alberta oil and gas. We are prepared to turn off the taps to BC. And, of course, fighting for a fair deal for Alberta means forcing a renegotiation of equalization. For too long, Canada has been happy to take our equalization dollars without appreciating that those dollars are earned on the back of our resource economy.
