Beaupre and Given weigh in on provincial election

Apr 15, 2019 | 11:35 AM

Tomorrow is Election Day in the province.

County Reeve Leanne Beaupre is hopeful all those who are eligible, will vote.

“The fact that it is an election and it is a privilege and your right to be able to vote, make sure the people that are contemplating voting, actually do go out and vote. Their voice is needed and they certainly need to exercise that privilege that they have,” said Beaupre.

In advance polls, 696,000 people voted, shattering the previous record of 235,000 in 2015.

“I am hoping that the party that forms the next government is mindful of the fact that the municipalities are the ones that actually do the work for a lot of their programming and that they’ll get to work right away and get back to addressing the issues that are top of mind for all of the people of Alberta,” Beaupre added.

Mayor Bill Given is also encouraging residents to get out and vote, and notes that it’s important for people to do so as decisions the Provincial Government make can have a direct impact on the community.

“I think it’s really important that people appreciate that the decisions the Provincial Government makes have a direct impact on life in Grande Prairie in a lot of different ways.” said Given. “Throughout the course of the provincial elections, it feels like we have focussed on a lot of national or provincial issues, but our Provincial Government makes decisions that impact the quality of life in Grande Prairie every day. That includes things like the cost of policing and how many police officers the city can afford, to things like how many potholes we have in our roads, because the province has an impact on grant funding for municipalities for infrastructure.”

Given added he’s hopeful that the elected representatives of Grande Prairie do a great job being the voice of the city in Edmonton, and that the party residents vote for put a priority on municipal issues and ensuring Alberta has strong communities.

Tomorrow, on Election Day, you can cast a ballot between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
