With the votes in, the unofficial results show the United Conservatives have won with a UCP majority.

NDP supporters were at the party office last night, where NDP candidate for Grande Prairie Todd Russell, and NDP candidate for Grande Prairie – Wapiti Shannon Dunfield addressed their supporters.

Dunfield says while the result wasn’t what she had hoped for, she’s thankful for all of the support during the campaign.

“I’m just really happy. We had such amazing volunteers and amazing support, and you can’t ask for anything more than that,” says Dunfield. “The results aren’t what we wanted, but at the same time, Alberta has voted and we go with that, and we just have to push for the next four years. And you know, in four years, I want to be there again.”

Dunfield explains running as a candidate has highlighted the importance of making voices heard and supporting the community. She also made special mention of her running mate in Russell, who has helped her throughout the process of running to become MLA of her riding.

“I’m just so grateful for all the support. Another big piece is: I do have to say a huge thank you to Todd. Todd was amazing; he did this four years ago. He pulled me under his wing and helped me along with some of the processes, and I’m incredibly proud to have run with him as well,” says Dunfield.

Russell also gave thanks to his supporters during his speech, and we can expect to see him working in politics again in the future.

“I think I didn’t make a good enough case here to convince the people in the Grande Prairie riding of our vision for the future. I need to think about that, and I definitely will come back, and I’ll be helping out next time to make sure we get our word out,” says Russell.

When it comes to projections for the next four years, Russell and Dunfield say they’re hopeful for the province, and Russell adds he still thinks the NDP had a great plan for Alberta. Both candidates say they’re looking forward to the next election.
