Palliative Care Conference aims to get conversation going on end of life care

Apr 19, 2019 | 7:00 AM

Next month, an event will be held to highlight the topic of end of life care.

Grande Prairie Palliative Care Society Executive Director Brenda Finch explains the event is going to look at what’s going on within our community with this type of care, and experts will be present to answer questions.

“The Palliative Care Conference on May 9 is actually about ‘Doing Death Better.’ So, connecting with our community and getting supports going, and looking at what we’re doing as a community and augmenting that, and asking questions, along with connecting with other people in the field,” says Finch.

Those other people in the field Finch mentions include some of the speakers which will be at the Pomeroy Hotel, who are Dr. Shane Sinclair, Dr. Wendy Duggleby, Kelsi McInnis, Jody Walker and Dr. Eman Hassan. They will be speaking about topics that range from music therapy to mental wellness boundaries.

This will be the second conference the organization has held in the city. The first event’s theme was Becoming a Compassionate Community, which Finch says did a great job informing the community on palliative care. She says this year’s conference builds upon last year’s platform and will educate people on understanding spirituality at the end of life.

More information on the event can be found on the Society’s website.

The Society has been operating in Grande Prairie since 2005.
