Local hockey round-up: Spirit River players advance to national championship game

Two Spirit River hockey players have a chance at a national championship.

The St. Albert Slash beat Saskatoon 2-1 in overtime Friday afternoon in the semi-final round at the Esso Cup national midget girls hockey championship being played in Sudbury, Ontario.

The Slash roster includes Dayle Ross and Tianna Yaremko of Spirit River.

Ross had the opening goal for the Slash – her 4th of the tournament.

The gold medal game is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. Alberta time between the Slash and host Sudbury.

Buffalos win

The Calgary Buffalos beat Halifax 5-2 Friday in their final round robin game at the Telus Cup, the national boys midget hockey championship being played in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Former GPAC players Garin Bjorklund and Marco Lopez are with the Buffalos.

Lopez had a goal while Bjorklund made 29 saves in the win.

The Calgary squad will take on the Toronto Young Nationals in the semi-final round Saturday at Noon Alberta time.

Alberta Cup update

Team Grey lost 6-1 to Team Green Friday at the Alberta Cup in Red Deer. Team Grey is now winless in three games.

Ty Doucette of Sexsmith and Jaxon Boucher and Lucas Schuett of Grande Prairie are with Team Grey.

Team Yellow beat Team Blue 6-4 and is now 1-1-1. Goalie Connor Stojan and assistant coach Kyle Weegar of Grande Prairie are with Team Yellow.

Team Yellow and Team Grey play again Saturday.
