High voter turnout speaks well of people in this area says Toews

The new MLA for Grande Prairie-Wapiti says he is really pleased to see such a high voter turnout in his constituency.

Voter turnout was over 80 percent and Travis Toews of the UCP garnered 17,772 of the 23,744 ballots cast.

“I think it’s really a feather in our hat for all of us in the Grande Prairie-Wapiti constituency , certainly all the candidates (and) every voter that came out. To see that level of involvement and participation in the democratic process, I think, speaks very well of this area.”

Toews thinks what he calls “a significant appetite for change” was one reason for the high turnout.

“The other thing that was clear is that there was just a high level of engagement going into this provincial election. I think regardless of who folks were intending or planning to support, there was a high level of engagement.”

He adds he is “enthused to get going” at his new job.

“There’s good folks around us, good folks within the party, within the government and I’ve got strong support in this constituency, so we’re looking forward to getting going.”

Jason Kenney at the new cabinet will be sworn in today. A ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at Government House in Edmonton.
