Social media storm over event at Grande Prairie Legion

A social media storm has erupted over an event held at the Grande Prairie Royal Canadian Legion branch.

Many are criticizing it for allowing the hall to be used for an event called Odin’s Feast April 22, something organizers said was open to everyone.

It was put on by the local branch of the group Soldiers of Odin.

In other communities, this group has been associated with white supremacists, but there is no sign of that here.

In a Facebook post, Royal Canadian Legion Dominion President Thomas Irvine says that the Dominion Command, quote, “does not support or tolerate any group or organization whose views or actions are contrary to our values and those of our country. This includes “The Soldiers of Odin.”

The statement goes on to say that it is up to National and Provincial commands to make sure events like the Grande Prairie one do not happen. It also says the national body has a clear policy on outlaw motorcycle gangs and a similar one will be developed for, quote, ” any group whose presence is not consistent with the Legion’s General By-Laws and our Articles of Faith.”

Everything Grande Prairie has reached out the the local Legion for comment.
