Local horse club gives out $50,000 in donations

Schools, 4-H clubs, and community groups are splitting over $50,000 from the Peace Draft Horse Club.

The money was collected during the most recent edition of Northern Spirit: A Celebration of Light, which is held every December at Evergreen Park.

Club Vice President, Jody White says all the money came from admissions.

“I think it was a record-setting year for the amount of people going through. We charge $5.00 per person on the wagons and $15.00 per vehicle going through. All the money we raised was from the Northern Spirit light show.”

He adds one group, Seniors Outreach, is getting two donations.

“They got a double. They collected two cheques from us, so they got over $8,000. It helps provide the ride share program for them and helps them if (they’re going) to a dance or whatever, then they can get a bus to take them from the lodge over and that kind of stuff.”

Other groups getting donations include the Beaverlodge-Red Willow Boys & Girls Club, the Community Foundation of Northwestern Alberta, Grade 3 Reading University, KidSport, Angel Flight, the Mighty Peace Youth Council, Canadian Ski Patrol, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Most of the donations are around $4,000, with the Youth Council one around $2,000.

Twenty-one schools will get $750 each. The money will be used for breakfast and hot lunch programs.

Two 4-H clubs are also getting $300 each to put towards their Achievement Day. They are the Montaneuse 4-H Club and the Saskatoon Mountain Multi Club.

White adds a lot of volunteer effort goes into the show, with smaller things going up while people are still using the campground.

“Once the campers are out, then we can start setting up the big displays in the campground. It takes about two months of weekends. So, you’ve got eight days each month, it takes us about 16 days (with) anywhere from 10 to 25 volunteers showing up to help each day. The tear-down is quite a bit easier, (it takes) about two days.”
