Natural gas explosion tears apart workshop near De Winton

May 21, 2019 | 2:05 PM

A man is being treated for serious injuries after a natural gas explosion that tore apart a workshop on a rural property just south of Calgary.

Witnesses report seeing chunks of debris hurled several metres into the air when the blast happened just before 8:30 p.m. Monday, about three kilometres west of De Winton.

A large plume of smoke could be seen for several kilometres, but fire officials say there was no risk to the public.

The 36-year-old man was pulled from the wreckage by relatives and friends and later taken to a Calgary hospital for treatment of burns and other injuries.

More than two dozen firefighters from four departments were called to the scene.

There is no immediate word on what led up to the explosion.
