230 High Level evacuees in Grande Prairie

UPDATE: GPREP says it expects hundreds more evacuees to come to Grande Prairie. Hours at the reception centre have been extended to 11 p.m.

Some evacuees from High Level have made their way to the Swan City.

The Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership says 230 people have registered at the reception centre at Grande Prairie Regional College since it opened Tuesday.

GPREP says in a release that they are staying in hotels and being provided with meals, along with social and medical support.

GPREP says people who have had to evacuate must register at the reception centre. It is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Another 250 people have made their way to Peace River, with more expected to arrive Wednesday from Paddle Prairie.

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry says 110 firefighters are working to protect homes and other property in both High Level and Mackenzie County. Another 76 firefighters and 24 helicopters are battling the blaze.

Fire guards are in place on then southwest side of High Level, as well as some Mackenzie County homes and two forestry mills.

Fire guards are also being established on High Level’s northwest side.

It is estimated that the Chuckegg Creek fire has burned over 92,000 hectares and forced thousands of people to leave High Level, Mackenzie County, and the Busche River First Nation.
