MP, groups slam rural crime report

May 23, 2019 | 2:10 PM

An Alberta member of parliament calls a new report on rural crime an affront to rural Canadians who worry about being victimized.

Shannon Stubbs made her comments after a final report from the public safety committee brought forward no recommendations on how to tackle the problem.

In a release, Stubbs adds the committee held only six meetings to hear from witnesses, then took six months to submit a two-page report with no recommendations.

“Clearly, the dramatic increase in rural crime is not a priority to the Liberals. After initially supporting this motion, it is unconscionable that the Liberals would dismiss the opportunity to take action on this pressing public safety crisis,” added Stubbs in that same release.

The Lakeland MP has introduced a private members bill calling for action on rural crime.

In that same release, Rural Municipalities of Alberta says it is also concerned that the committee did not adequately respond to the seriousness of the issue and the impact of crime on rural communities.

Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Association President Cor De Wit added “We at Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch continue to look forward to working together on any initiatives that may help to further reduce the property crime statistics in Alberta. Our organization is disappointed in the lack of recommendations for action in the report.”

The same release goes on to say that earlier this month, Statistics Canada released a report saying rural crime was 23 percent higher than urban crime across the country, with that number going to between 36 and 42 percent higher in western Canada.
