HIGH LEVEL FIRE

Change in Wind Direction Feared as High Level Wildfire Continues to Burn

May 25, 2019 | 8:10 AM

Provincial officials fear that winds fanning the flames of a wildfire near High Level could change this weekend in a more dangerous direction.

Shane Schreiber with the Alberta Emergency Management Agency says winds are expected to switch direction on Sunday.

A controlled burn technique has been created in order to create a containment boundary near the fire, which is 992.5 square kilometres in size.

About five-thousand evacuees are being told not to expect to return home until at least next week.

The province adds emergency funds for gas, food and other expenses should be available by Monday.

576 of thos evacuees have registered in Grande Prairie.

Grande Prairie Regional Emergency Partnership has established a Public Information line for evacuees that are staying in the Grande Prairie area.

That number is 780-567-5587, with the line being open daily from 8am to 8pm.

A Facebook page “GP Region High Level and Area Evacuees” has also been created, and evacuees are also encouraged to visit www.gprep.ca sign up for a daily newsletter.
