High Level fire

High Level fire update May 27

May 27, 2019 | 7:30 AM

Fire officials in Alberta hope their preparations over the last few days will protect High Level from shifting winds that began yesterday.

Some of the preparations included a controlled burn to cut off a potential path of fire fuel into the community.

Approximately five thousand people from the town and surrounding area were told to leave a week ago, but the prevailing winds kept the flames away from town and the fire usually stayed about three kilometres away.

A special air quality statement was issued yesterday, warning that communities in the north of the province may experience heavy smoke from the fires.

Meanwhile, GPREP has launched the process for any individuals wishing to donate items or other forms of support for the evacuees.

An email address donations@gprepeoc.com has been launched for members of the public to contact if they wish to make donations.

They can also fill out a form online at www.gprep.ca/donation-centre-sign-up, which GPREP will look at and then contact the potential donor if their items or services are needed.

As of Saturday, there were 640 evacuees registered as staying in Grande Prairie.
