High Level fire update May 28

May 28, 2019 | 5:50 AM

Five-thousand people forced from their homes in High Level, Alberta and other communities nearby due to wildfires are being told they won’t likely be able to return home before the weekend, at the earliest.

Crews have been bulldozing, back-burning and water bombing to ensure flames from the Chuckegg Creek fire don’t creep closer to High Level.

Provincial incident commander Scott Elliott says the weather hasn’t co-operated at all, with hot, dry and windy conditions persisting.

There are 194 firefighters working to protect homes and properties in High Level, while 400 firefighters and 28 helicopters are fighting the fire itself.

About 3,400 evacuees have applied online for evacuee financial support, and more than $3.4 million in support has been distributed.
