AJHL makes changes to upcoming season following AGM

May 29, 2019 | 7:47 AM

This past weekend the Alberta Junior Hockey League held their Annual General Meeting in Calgary and approved some adjustments for the 2019-2020 season.

In preparation for next season, the league has approved a 58 games schedule for the 15 teams, with unbalanced divisions following the Calgary Mustangs taking a year absence.

However, the biggest change which was made was to the playoff format.

The North division will see the Top 7 teams making the playoffs and the same format as last season with the 1st place team getting a Bye and 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5.

The changes come in the South where the Top 6 teams will make the playoffs and both the 1st and 2nd place teams will get Byes in the opening round while the 3rd seed plays the 6th and 4 vs 5.

This past season was a big one for the league as they hosted the National Championship, which was won by the Brook Bandits, and hosted both the CJHL Top Prospects Game (Okotoks) and the World Junior A Challenge (Bonnyville).

The AJHL also experienced a rise in attendance this past season with over 365,000 fans enjoying league play across the province which is the highest total in the past 5 years.

The 2019-2020 season will begin on September 13th.

A full league schedule will be released in mid-June.
