Evacuation order for part of County of Northern Lights

May 29, 2019 | 3:23 PM

More people in northern Alberta are being forced to flee their homes because of a wildfire.

The County of Northern Lights has declared a state of local emergency and issued a mandatory evacuation order for anyone living west of the Notikewin River, south of the Twin Lakes campground and north of Township Road 922.

People leaving the area are asked to use Highway 35 as the evacuation route and to drive carefully as smoke is limiting visibility.

Anyone leaving the area is being asked to report to a registration centre set up at the County of Northern Lights main office in Manning.

What fire officials call the Battle Complex fires have burned 33,625 hectares in the Notikewin area

Crews are working to build a fire guard.

Three hundred firefighters, support staff, 24 helicopters, and several pieces of heavy equipment are fighting the out of control blaze.
