Several northern communities are being evacuated

A mandatory evacuation alert is now in place for Wabasca and the Bigstone Cree Nation. The M.D. of Opportunity is telling people to evacuate immediately. People are being told to head south to a reception centre at the Calling Lake Recreation Centre.

Mandatory evacuation alerts are also in place for Carcajou, Keg River, Hawk Hills, Steen River, and residents living between Township Road 922 and the north end of the County of Northern Lights.

All but Steen River are being impacted by the Chuckegg Fire.

A separate fire that has burned well over 17,000 hectares is threatening that community in the far north.

The Town of Peace River says an influx of evacuees means all of its hotel rooms are booked. It is asking people to try High Prairie or local campgrounds.
