More Northern residents placed on Evacuation Alert as wildfires continue to burn

Jun 2, 2019 | 7:34 AM

Another 12 thousand residents in Mackenzie County have been placed on evacuation alert due to wildfires in the North Peace.

In a news release put out last night, the province says the residents, located both North and South of Peace River and west of Range Road 120, should start gathering belongings and be ready to leave on a moment’s notice.

They also updated the number of people already forced to leave their homes due to the fires, as that number has climbed over the 11 thousand mark.

Small amounts of rain fell over the region yesterday, but it also brought with it lightning that caused three new fires to start.

All three were small in size and were quickly contained,

The Chuckegg Creek wildfire near High Level is now 2800 square kilometres in size, while the McMillan Wildfire complex near Bigstone Cree Nation is now 2100 square kilometres.
