HIGHWAY 40 CONSTRUCTION

Expect delays along Highway 40 with construction underway

Jun 5, 2019 | 12:19 PM

In the next couple of days, road work will ramp up on Highway 40 south of Grande Prairie.

Crews will be building nine passing lanes on Highway 40 approximately 38 kilometres south of the city between Bald Mountain Creek and Hammerhead Road.

They will also be constructing a couple safety/rest areas and improving seven intersections.

Once this work is done, they plan to pave 56 kilometres of Highway 40 between the Kakwa River and the Canfor intersection.

Communications Advisor with Alberta Transportation Wayne Wood says they are hoping delays will be minimal, as a lot of the work is going to be happening along the sides of the highway where they are building passing lanes.

“There will be some slow downs occasionally, some of the speed limits will be dropped down to about 80 km/hr and in some cases 50 km/hr depending on the work that is being done,” said Wood.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and watch for flag persons and construction workers.

According to provincial statistics, more than 5,000 vehicles travel Highway 40 between Grande Prairie and the Canfor Road every day.

Work is expected to take this summer and next and should be done by September 2020.
