City council approves changes to small lot by-laws

Jun 7, 2019 | 5:30 AM

City council has voted to ease some of its regulations around smaller lot sizes.

Council approved bylaw changes at its meeting Tuesday that would see the 25 percent limit on such lots in new areas temporarily relaxed.

This will stay in effect until May 31, 2021.

People from the Urban Development Institute had lobbied for the change.

The city and builders say this will mean less urban sprawl, create a more diversified stock of housing, and open the market to more first-time home buyers.

The 25 percent limit was brought in by a previous council over concerns over snow plowing issues, a lack of on-street parking, and poorer aesthetics.

City administration says planning improvements, like better use of back lanes, have been made since that time.
