County awards Operating Assistance Grants to Recreation Boards

Jun 12, 2019 | 1:15 PM

The County of Grande Prairie has dished out over $181,000 in Operating Assistance Grants for several non-profit recreation boards across the County, plus another $730,890 in grants to 30 different sport, recreation, and cultural facilities within those boards.

The following were the boards that received the operating assistance grants:

  • Beaverlodge–Elmworth-Huallen Recreation Board ($28,271)
  • Clairmont-Bezanson Recreation Board ($34,403)
  • Grande Prairie Recreation Board ($38,200)
  • Hythe-Demmitt-Valhalla Recreation Board ($25,328)
  • Sexsmith-La Glace-Teepee Creek Recreation Board ($32,462)
  • Wembley-Dimsdale-Saskatoon Lake Recreation Board ($22,681)

“Each councillor, in their council division, represents maybe one or two areas and that money is based on a per-capita,” said Reeve Leanne Beaupre.

Operating assistance grant funding is provided to non-profit and volunteer groups within the County that provide recreational or cultural services to residents. To be eligible, the groups must show proof of volunteerism and fundraising, and achieve the goals in which they set out. The money is meant to help pay for utilities, maintenance and other general expenses to operate their facilities and programs.

Beaupre notes it is vitally important for the County to ensure these organizations have the proper funding to continue to serve the community.

“It does talk about assistance to keep these community projects, that are run mainly by volunteers, keeping those so that they are still healthy and that they can continue to operate in our community.”
