Lockdown ended at two Sylvan Lake schools

A lockdown at two Sylvan Lake schools which share a building is over.

École Mother Teresa School and Fox Run School went into lockdown around 11 a.m.

Chinook’s Edge Superintendent Kurt Sacher told rdnewsNOW at 12:30 that, “Police have given the all clear at Fox Run and neighbouring Mother Teresa. Everyone is safe and on their way home.”

RCMP say an anonymous phone threat was made towards the school and that the lockdown was put in place as a precaution.

“Fox Run School received an anonymous call at approximately 10:50 a.m. indicating that a person was coming into the school with a firearm. A lockdown was called in both schools, and RCMP responded immediately. An entire sweep of the school was conducted by the RCMP and nothing was found. There was no incident at either school and police will continue to investigate the source of the call. RCMP commended both schools for their response and cooperation. We thank parents for their response and staying clear of the building,” a statement from Mother Teresa School reads on Facebook.

Parents were asked to stay away from the school while RCMP did their sweep.

“I feel good about how well our staff responded, and the police response was very impressive,” Sacher adds. “It’s just an unfortunate situation that we hope to understand a little more fully as time goes on.”

Thursday was the final day of school before summer vacation, Sacher also noted. The day was set to end early at noon, which also was cause for delay as buses were getting set to go to the schools for pickup.
