Mid-July the target opening time for Wembley water line

Jun 28, 2019 | 5:30 AM

Aquatera has targeted mid-July as the time when the water line from Grande Prairie will be complete and in use.

The company’s Engineering Services Manager Ralph Wohlgemuth says a repair, plus some testing and flushing, needs to be completed first.

“We have a leak in between Highway 40 and the Water Treatment Plant. Very poor ground conditions (are) making that repair challenging, but it’s one that we’re working on around the clock, actually, to get it done.”

He tells us what will be done after the leak is repaired.

“We will pressure that section up to our hydro-test pressure, hold that until that’s completed, and then we start chlorination of the line from our plant through to Wembley.”

Wohlgemuth says it has been “a long, hard slug” to get this line built.

“Certainly, as we get into this particular repair that we’re doing right now, the ground conditions which have been exacerbated by the wet spring and the wet weather that we’ve had here recently haven’t helped. Part of the challenge of finding this particular leak is we’re still dealing with frost in the area.”

Wohlgemuth says lines are tested using a higher water pressure than would be used when it is operational. That is how the leak was found.
