Canada Day festivities going ahead despite rainy forecast

Jun 30, 2019 | 7:00 AM

Despite the rainy forecast, festivities will go on as scheduled for Canada Day celebrations put on by the City of Grande Prairie.

Activities get underway at noon today down at Revolution Place, which play host to the Canada Day Carnival. There will be carnival rides, entertainment, local food trucks and beer gardens set up to get the party started.

However, most festivities going on there have been moved indoors to try and avoid the wet weather.

All rides and entertainment will be moved inside the Bowes Event Centre and Revolution Place. The food trucks will be parked outside on the H.A. Rice Plaza and the beer gardens will be set up outside should the weather hold out. If not though, beer will be available inside the building.

“Everything is the same, just that unfortunately, we can party in the rain, but we can’t party in the thunder and lightning,” said Event and Marketing Specialist at Revolution Place Chelsea O’Neill. “That’s a cancelled event if we do that.”

The carnival will go from noon to 10 p.m. today and noon to 6 p.m. on Monday.

Meanwhile, events at Muskoseepi Park get underway at 8 p.m. this evening for the Canada Day Kick-Off. There will be two stages of entertainment, plenty of kid’s activities and local food trucks and vendors to try.

The fireworks will also be going ahead as scheduled. The show can be seen over the reservoir at around midnight.

Canada Day Monday will also have the annual parade. This year’s theme is “Canadian Pride”.

There will be more than 100 floats this year, being judged on four different categories: Best costumes, best homemade, most child-friendly and most patriotic.

The parade starts at 1 p.m. and will follow the traditional parade route:

  • Start westbound on 108 Avenue and 94 Street
  • Turn south on 96 Street
  • West on 100 Avenue
  • North on 106 Street, disbanding in the GPRC parking lot.

Celebrations in Muskoseepi Park will follow at 2:30, going until 6 p.m. with plenty more entertainment, activities, food trucks and vendors taking part.

“The only thing that really does stop anything from happening would be extreme weather, extreme lightning, extreme winds that would make things such as the fireworks unsafe,” said Summer Events Coordinator at Muskoseepi Park Mike Moman. “The forecast does not call for anything that would be preventing those from happening.”

Should there be any last minute cancellations or changes, they will be posted on the City of Grande Prairie’s Facebook page.
