Pet licensing and leash regulations the focus for Enforcement this July

Jul 10, 2019 | 12:39 PM

The Bylaw Enforcement Education Program for this month focuses on animal control.

When not on their owner’s property or using a designated off-leash area of the city, all dogs must be on a leash.

Sgt. Charlene Gallant says keep your pets on a leash and you will not run the risk of it attacking people or other pets.

If they are not on a leash there’s also the risk pets could run into traffic.

“We had a collision here not long ago where an individual slammed on their brakes for a dog that was running at large, running across the road and they in turn got rear ended by the vehicle behind them.”

There are four designated off leash areas in the city; South Bear Creek, Royal Oaks, Crystal Ridge west and Crystal Ridge northeast.

Dogs are also not permitted within five metres of any playground or athletic field in the city.

Another thing they will be checking for is pet licensing. All dogs and cats within the city, must be licensed once the animal reaches three-months-old.

Sgt. Gallant says it’s the law to have you dog and cat licensed in the city, but it’s also beneficial to the owner, in the event it goes missing.

“When we get the call for an animal roaming at large at least we can identify that animal and return it back to the owner, instead of paying fees and that type of thing, or bringing it to the pound.”

And, always remember to clean up after your pet. The city says all solid waste must be picked up immediately and disposed of in a sanitary manner. Most city parks and trail areas have bag dispensers to help with this kind of clean up.
