Horse Lake man charged after stealing, crashing vehicle

Jul 11, 2019 | 2:41 PM

A Horse Lake man is facing several charges following the recovery of a stolen vehicle.

Police were notified of an erratic driver at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday on Highway 43 near Highway 672. It was reported to police that the vehicle had crashed into the ditch and the driver then tried to flee on foot.

That led to the suspect trying to steal an ATV off of a neighboring property of the crash site, but failed in his attempt as the property owner chased him away.

The suspect then tried to hitch a ride from another nearby home owner, but was impeded by witnesses that had followed him in his attempt to flee. Beaverlodge RCMP then arrived to arrest the man.

The vehicle that the suspect was driving and crashed was reported stolen out of Grande Prairie earlier that morning. A knife was recovered from inside that same vehicle by police.

Twenty-eight-year-old Arlen Jake Camille Ferguson has been charged with:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Attempted theft of a motor vehicle
  • Fail to comply with conditions (x5)
  • Driver in accident fail to remain at scene (Traffic Safety Act)

Ferguson remains in police custody and has a bail hearing in Grande Prairie Provincial Court set for July 15.
