Highway 43X bypass set to open next month

Jul 18, 2019 | 6:39 AM

The Highway 43X bypass is set to open in about a month’s time.

Alberta Transportation Regional Director Ryan Konowalyk says that the targeted time of completion is the end of August.

“We’re currently finishing the tie-in west of Grande Prairie, the new intersection location. That should be done in a couple weeks and the rest of the bypass should be open to traffic by the end of August,” said Konowalyk. “We’ll continue with some site clean-up and finishing up after that, but the traffic would be using it by the end of August.”

The round-about at 116 street, which is the other connecting intersection to the north, was completed back in September. With both intersections ready to go in a couple weeks time, there is just a few other odds and ends to finish up to get the road ready.

“So right now, we are continuing to place some of the granular materials and the asphalt overtop of it. So, that’s the work that needs to get done by the end of August to open that stretch up.”

The project, which officially began construction in the winter of 2016, was slated to be completed by October of last year. That deadline was pushed to this summer because of unfavourable weather conditions through 2017 and 2018.

“Over the life of the project, we have experienced inclement weather. This year (2018) alone, we’ve lost over a month and, as everybody knows, there was some flooding this past spring that kind of delayed the start,” Konowalyk told EverythingGP back in October.

Despite the delays, Konowalyk is just looking forward to the highway being finished.

“It’ll be a good day when we get that one open.”
