Wembley town council rejects Land Use By-Law change

Jul 23, 2019 | 5:27 PM

Wembley town council has voted against adding truck and rail trans-loading terminals to the town’s Land Use By-Law.

Council made the decision at Monday night’s meeting. The vote was unanimous.

A release from the town says the decision came after council considered all information it had, including more than 180 letters from Wembley residents.

The discussion started with an idea of having a crude-by-rail facility in the community.

That led to the formation of a group opposed to having such a facility in town.

In a statement it gave to that meeting Monday, Source Energy Services says it wanted the change after the downturn in the energy industry made it want to look for ways to diversify.

The company added that a rail and truck facility would allow it to serve other industries like agriculture, something it can’t do right now under existing by-laws.

Back in January when the idea first surfaced, an information package that had been put together by Source and potential customer Tidewater Midstream said a crude-by-rail facility would load five-to-ten cars per day.

Locomotive noise, odour, and traffic has been identified as concerns by the town at that time.
