Survey says Grande Prairie Airport tops in Canada for on-time departures

Jul 24, 2019 | 5:30 AM

The Grande Prairie Airport is the most reliable airport in Canada for departing on time, according to a study done by the Official Aviation Guide.

The survey looked at 125 airlines and 505 airports from around the world between June 2018 and May 2019. In that time, 81.9% of flights leaving YQU left on time. That beat out the Kelowna International Airport by just 0.7 percent for top spot in Canada.

“Although most Canadian airlines and airports rank in the lower half of the worldwide survey this is a great testament to the professionalism and dedication of all parties at our local airport,” said Airport CEO Brian Grant, in a release.

The Grande Prairie Airport ranks 108th across the globe, putting them in the top quarter of all airports surveyed. A total of 21 airports across Canada were surveyed, the top 10 of those all coming from western Canada. Fort McMurray ranked third at 81%, the Edmonton International Airport sixth at 80.1% and Calgary in seventh at 79.7%.

The two airlines that offer daily service to and from Calgary and Edmonton at YQU, that being Westjet and Air Canada, were two of the airlines included in the survey. Westjet was well above all other Canadian airlines at 77.1%. Air Canada was third amongst Canadian airlines at 66.6%

“On-time departure statistics are important to airlines in monitoring their service levels and proficiencies,” said Grant. “Airports can be a major contributor to the success of the airlines’ performance, so it’s important that airports provide the best possible operational environment, especially in inclement weather.”

The Official Aviation Guide, also known as OAG Aviation Group Ltd., is an industry leader in aviation statistics and studies based in the UK and has been operating since 1929.

The most efficient airport in their rankings from the survey was Hilo International Airport in Hawaii, which had a score of 94.6%. The Lisbon (Portugal) International Airport had the lowest at 59.3%.

Amongst airlines, Garuda Indonesia was tops at 91.6%. Cebu Pacific Air out of the Philippines was the lowest at 56%. A Canadian airline also finished with a one-star rating, that being Sunwing Airlines, with a score of 57.8%.
