TRAIN DERAILMENT

Investigators trying to determine cause of train derailment in southeastern Alberta

Investigators are trying to determine what caused a train derailment in southeastern Alberta that forced people from their homes and closed a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway.

Residents in and around Irvine were told to evacuate after part of a CP Railway train derailed yesterday afternoon, but the notice was lifted just before 11 p.m..

CPR issued a statement last night saying two cars were leaking styrene — a flammable liquid that’s used to make plastics — but those small leaks were being contained.
