Area Structure Plan

Final community consultation on North West Clairmont ASP goes Thursday

County residents will have a chance to have a look, and have their say, about the North West Clairmont Area Structure Plan at an open house on Thursday.

The ASP is being developed as a guide for future development of that area within the hamlet that is intended to help increase commercial and industrial capacity. The plan is in its final phase, which is just in need of public input before the final draft is sent to council this fall.

According the Planning and Development Services Director Nick Lapp, this plan has two major components to it.

“We’re proposing an area to the north of Ferguson Lake that will accommodate the expansion of rail related industries into the area,” said Lapp. “We’re planning rail alignment as part of the Area Structure Plan, that will allow for added access to the CN Rail line.”

“We’re also planning a retail/commercial area in the southeast part of the plan at the intersection of Township Road 724 and Highway 2,” said Lapp. “Which would allow for large format retail and commercial uses to be established in that area.”

This is the third and final phase of the project, as public consultation was held back in 2015 and 2017 about this plan. Some concerns addressed during those consultations included noise and pollution that would be created by expanding rail access. Concerns about the environmental protection around Ferguson Lake, as well as flooding to the southwest side of the lake were also brought forward.

The open house will be happening at the Wellington Resource Centre at the Clairmont Community School on Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
