Email Scam

Peace River area business hit with email scam

Aug 15, 2019 | 3:03 PM

Peace Regional RCMP are warning Peace Country businesses about a scam that has been brought to their attention.

A report to Peace Regional RCMP Wednesday found that what police are calling a “large company” had been imitated through a nearly identical email address.

The fake email address was just one letter off. The address normally ends with @telus.net, while the fake account ended with @gtelus.net

Three clients of the affected company were emailed with the fake account. The fraudster told the clients in the email that their bank account had been compromised and that all invoice payments were being sent to an Ontario bank.

RCMP say the matter involved total payments of $250,000. A similar case involving a fake email address this week cost the City of Saskatoon $1 million

The Peace Regional General Investigation Section is investigating the situation and is warning accounting departments of area businesses to be vigilant in cases where a client or a business they deal with is asking for payments to be re-directed.

Any businesses in the Peace River area that suspect they may have been affected by this are asked to contact Constable Michelle Phillips at 780-699-5506.
