Storm hopefuls look to impress as training camp begins

The start of the 2019-2020 season for the Grande Prairie Storm officially doesn’t begin until September 13.

However, preparations for the year on the ice begins Friday at Revolution Place as the Storm begin training camp.

General Manager Mark Bomersback states it is easily one of the most exciting times of the year.

“This is almost always the most exciting time of the year. You have the returning guys coming back and seeing how they matured and developed over the summer. You then get your new recruits who are coming in and then you have guys coming in for a tryout. You look forward to seeing guys try and impress for sure.”

The Storm will have around 40 players taking part in training camp this weekend, including 13 from the Grande Peace Athletic Club.

It will be a younger group coming to camp this year and as Bomersback explains, those players will get every opportunity to play in a number of situations this year.

“Even the rookies coming in this year will get more of a chance to play in important situations this year. Kind of our whole mentality of the team this year is to give the young players a chance and see what they can do with it.”

He adds that making the jump from High School hockey or Midget AAA to Junior A is a big step, but Bomersback has no doubt in his mind that the newcomers will come to camp and impress.

All of the hopefuls will be on the ice Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for practices.

The camp will wrap up with the annual Brian Nash game which takes place Monday at 7:30 p.m.

All of the proceeds from the game go to the Storm’s Brian Nash Scholarship fund.
