HD Ride 4A Cure to be held on Saturday

Aug 23, 2019 | 2:01 PM

This Saturday, the Peace Country Chapter of the Huntington Society of Canada are hosting their 10th annual HD Ride 4A Cure at the Teepee Creek Stampede Grounds.

Huntington disease (HD) is a hereditary, neurodegenerative illness with physical, cognitive and emotional symptoms.

There is a minimum pledge of $100 to participate in the ride or run on Saturday, but people are encouraged to come even if they aren’t in the ride.

Mack Erno, President of the Peace Country chapter, says there will be other activities open to everyone.

“We have a supper, a banquet on Saturday night, as well as a fundraiser auction and a live dance, a community dance everyone is welcome to come to, both participants in the ride and anybody in the community that is interested, it features live music of Night Ryders.”

For non-riders and runners, the supper costs $10 and $25 for the community dance.

Both are free for participants of the ride.

All proceeds raised through this event will go to support Family Services and Research to delay or stop Huntington disease.

The disease is a hereditary illness that attacks the brain and can lead to the inability ti think, speak, walk and essentially, control one’s body. The HD gene is dominant, so a child born to a parent with the disease has a 50% chance of being born with it.

On Friday, there will also be a Chili Cook-off at 5 p.m., a barrel racing jackpot at 7 p.m. and team roping jackpot at 9 p.m.

On Sunday, August 25 at 10 a.m., there will be a pancake breakfast at the TP Barn.

The Peace Country Chapter HD Ride is also the largest fundraiser in Canada, says Erno.

“We are the largest fundraiser in Canada for Huntington Disease which is pretty impressive for northern Alberta, nevermind based out of Teepee Creek.”
