Vipers begin prep for 19/20 season

Aug 23, 2019 | 11:19 AM

With less than a month until the 25th anniversary season for the North West Junior Hockey League, the Sundown Oilfield Services Sexsmith Vipers will open up training camp this weekend.

President of the Vipers Kelly Wilson shares that registration numbers for this year’s camp are up from last year.

“Our numbers are very good. We are expecting somewhere between 35 to 40 hockey players come out this weekend and tryout. The numbers are looking very good.”

Typically the Vipers usually get 25-30 players at their camp.

With the higher numbers at camp this year, Wilson expects it to be extremely competitive.

“It all begins Friday night with two practice sessions. Saturday we will decide after Friday’s ice times, whether we have two more practices or go straight into games. Sunday we will definitely have a game.”

The Vipers are scheduled to play their first exhibition game on September 13 in High Level where they will meet the North Peace Navigators.

Those two clubs will then meet one week later when the games begin to count for real in the Vipers home opener on September 20.
